Buck Pass– Own A Piece Of American History

Entrance to Buck Pass Wildlife Area

Buck Pass is surrounded with fascinating Florida History, both ancient and modern. Buck Pass is a 22 acre parcel of land that borders the northwest side of #1 Federal Road, which is four miles southeast of Lamont Florida.

Lamont, formerly called "Asile" by the Natives, is home to the first wheat field in United States. But the history surrounding Buck Pass and #1 Federal is much more fascinating.

The #1 Federal takes you from Lamont/Asile to St. Augustine. It was a route commonly used by the natives to get from Asile to "Aniheka," now known as Tallahassee.

In southeast Lamont, #1 Federal crosses the "River of Sticks" better known as the Aucilla River. "River of sticks" was the name given by the Native Americans. The road continues east past Buck Pass, forging all the way to St. Augustine, Florida's first State capital.

Hernando de Soto was the first European Explorer to pass through Buck Pass

The First Federal Road Commissioned In The United States

#1 Federal Road is appropriately named. It is, literally, America's first federal highway. Its history truly comes alive in the 16th Century with Hernando De Soto's brutal struggle to reach Aniheka/Tallahassee.

Hernando de Soto was the first European to lead an expedition deep into the interior of North America. In 1539, de Soto and his army traveled this very route, past Buck Pass, on the way to Aniheka.

Upon approaching the "River of Sticks," de Soto was met with fierce resistance by the Apalachee Natives. He was forced to split his 600 man regiment into three Divisions. After a lengthy battle, he entered Apalachee Territory where he reorganized his men. From this point, right around Buck Pass, de Soto and his men continued west to Aniheka/Tallahassee where they remained until spring.

During their 1539 winter encampment at Aniheka, de Soto and his men celebrated Christmas. The very first Christmas in North America was celebrated in Tallahassee.

Looking South East on Modern Day #1 Federal Road

In 1824 the United States Congress authorized that #1 Federal Road be fully constructed as America's first Federal Highway. It connected St. Augustine (Florida's first Capitol) to Pensacola in the western portion of Florida's panhandle.

The Florida Territorial Council contracted U.S. Army Captain Daniel Burch to build this 445 mile long road for a fee of $20,000.00. Burch left Pensacola and traveled east. With his own equipment and men, including several slaves, he surveyed the right-of-way for this road.

Burch and his men were met with bad weather and attacks from natives. In spite of these debilitating occurrences, Burch managed to complete the 445 mile survey in just over a month.

Once the survey was complete, Burch's goal was to complete the Federal Road in two years. He commissioned John Bellamy, a Monticello plantation owner, to build the portion between Picolata, on the St. Johns River, to the Ochlockonee River, west of Tallahassee.

Bellamy received $13,500 for his work on this portion of the road. Some areas were called Bellamy Avenue or Old Bellamy Rd. In Waukeenah, nine miles west of Lamont, this road goes by the name "Old St. Augustine Road."

The Story Of The Stump-Knocker

The #1 Federal Road Sign on a modern day stump-free road

In areas like Lamont, frequently traveled Native American trails were used as part of the federal road. In other areas, the road was continued and created by removing trees with crosscut saws. In these new portions of the road, it was acceptable to leave stumps 12 inches high or less.

Occasionally a stump slightly taller was overlooked, destroying the axle of a passing buggy or wagon. This led to the nickname, "Stump-knocker," being given to this road in some areas.

Today, portions of #1 Federal Road are covered by pavement or city street signs displaying one of its early names. The "#1 Federal Rd" sign is present at the northwest side of Buck Pass. On the southeast side of the same property, by the Suwanee River's Cuba Bay Landing, the sign "Old Federal Highway" is displayed.

This property was appropriately named "Buck Pass." The vast number of artifacts found on Buck Pass tells us that many centuries of people have traveled and camped on this property. The artifacts have been dated from as early as America's earliest "Paleo" people to our more modern historical figures.

Daniel Boone and many other great historical legends have passed through Buck Pass

The people in the Modern Era include Hernando de Soto, Daniel Boone, America's best known Frontiersman, and President Zachary Taylor. President Taylor passed through Buck Pass on his way to the Battle of Okeechobee.

Buck Pass is a habitat for all types of wildlife. It is also a major intersection between four, well-managed Plantations and the 2,200 acre Suwanee River Water Management District's "Cuba Bay" tract. Cuba Bay is closed to hunting.

The primary purpose of these adjoining plantations is the management of timber and farming. This creates an excellent habitat for wildlife.

Bailey Farm's Don Bailey was the first land owner in the area to manage quality bucks. Mr. Bailey, his sons, and grandchildren continue this practice today. The Baileys have assisted the Foster family in managing their Red Hill and Foster Plantations. Avalon Plantation, owned by the Ted Turner Family, is comprised of over 30,000 serene and untouched acres. Avalon is specifically managed for bird hunting and mature bucks.

Buck Pass borders #1 Federal Road and 2,200 acres SRWMD Land

The presence of food sources on these successfully managed plantations provides extra benefits to the sanctuary provided by Cuba Bay (which is closed to hunting). This creates the low-pressure environment ideal for bucks to stay and mature.

As a result Buck Pass has become a major game trail, earning its well-known nickname "Buck Pass."

The Aucilla River divides the Suwanee River Management's 2,200 acres (Cuba Bay). This places its east portion in Madison County, which is tied for 4th place in Florida's production of trophy bucks. Its western portion in Jefferson County claims the #3 spot.
